Quick answer
A "wala" (also called ladi or saram) is a string of small crackers that burst one after another. The number is how many crackers are on the string: a 28 or 56 wala lasts seconds, a 1000 wala is the classic Diwali-night string, and 5000–10,000 walas run for minutes and are used at weddings and big community events.
Sizes
| Size | Use it for |
|---|---|
| 28 / 56 / 100 wala | A quick burst at puja time |
| 1000 wala | The classic Lakshmi Puja garland |
| 2000 wala | A longer celebration for the family |
| 5000 / 10,000 wala | Weddings, baraats and community events |
How to light a garland safely
- Unroll it fully in a straight line on an open road or ground.
- Move vehicles and anything flammable away.
- Light the end with a long agarbatti and walk at least 10 metres away.
